Of course!! The film industry is constantly evolving, and artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most exciting new technologies that is transforming the way movies are made. AI is being used to create realistic visuals, generate realistic soundscapes, and even create interactive experiences.

One of the most interesting ways that AI is being used in film is through virtual production. Virtual production is a technique that uses real-time 3D technology to create sets and environments. This allows filmmakers to see their movies come to life in a way that was never before possible.

However, AI is also being used to write scripts. I’ve read a few of these scripts. They are….. interesting to say the least. Three years ago my friends and I did a zoom stage reading of a AI written fanfic script my friend had created. It has to be one of my favorite pandemic memories how hilariously bad it was.

AI-powered writing tools that help generate ideas, create outlines, or organize thoughts are super helpful for writers. This can free up writers to focus on the creative aspects of their work, and it can also help to streamline the writing process.

But an AI that could replace a writer? Or even a writer’s assistant? No thank you. Part of the challenge of being a professional writer is putting in the weeks, months, and years to write a bad script just to learn how to write a good one.

While it could bring down the barrier to entry, I think a lot of writers will have a hard time working with newcomers that can kick out a feature in 3 days, myself included. Will it be the equivalent of store bought marinara vs. made from scratch? Probably, but who makes it from scratch anymore?

However, the use of AI in film is not without its challenges. One of the biggest challenges is that AI can be expensive. The software and hardware required for virtual production can be very costly, and the AI-powered writing tools are also not cheap. Imagine, people are cheaper than computers even after they reach the fair deal.

Despite these challenges, the use of AI in film is only going to grow in the future. AI has the potential to revolutionize the way movies are made, and it is already having a significant impact on the industry.

The current Writers Guild of America strike is a reminder that the human element is still essential to filmmaking. Writers are the ones who create the stories that we love, and they deserve to be fairly compensated for their work. I am hopeful that the strike will be resolved with the writers able to get the fair treatment that they deserve.
